Declan Flynn was a 31-year-old man who was chased and killed by a gang of teenagers in Fairview Park 1982, on the assumption that he was gay.

The teenagers were arrested and taken to trial but were given suspended sentences and walked free. A story that feels all to familiar, this became seen as the catalyst that sparked Ireland’s biggest gay rights movement.

The brief was to find typography from 80’s era Dublin. I had a field day and found some great examples of magazines from this archive.

Some of these were from post punk/editorial fanzines such as Vox and Hot Press. Known for their DIY scene, I was heavily drawn to the photocopy style for it’s high contrast.

The use of san serif fonts with unique slabs echoed the characteristics from Irish Gaelic fonts. The examples mentioned also used typewriter/monotype fonts. I liked how this circled back to the newspaper clippings inspiration from Declan’s story.

The focus of the film was to follow the last day of his personal struggle and self-acceptance before his brutal murder. It felt fitting to use a profile perspective from the film to illustrate this point of view.

The font chosen was ‘Genesco’, a typeface generated through the analysis of pages scanned from a copy of Lucretia’s On the Nature of Things. We felt it was the perfect balance of what looked familiar yet imperfect.
